You can wash standard seasoned Lodge cast iron with mild dish soap. Hand-wash it, dry it fully, and apply a thin coat of oil; do not put it in the dishwasher.
Detailed guide
Can you wash cast iron with soap or put it in a dishwasher?
For standard seasoned Lodge cast iron, dish soap is fine, but the dishwasher is not recommended. Wash the pan by hand, dry it completely, and wipe on a very thin layer of cooking oil.
Soap does not automatically ruin seasoning
Lodge's care instructions say to wash its cookware with warm, soapy water. The useful distinction is between ordinary dishwashing and leaving iron wet for a long time. Soaking, air-drying, or storing a damp pan can encourage rust.
After cooking, let the pan cool enough to handle safely. Wash it with warm water and a brush or pad. Dry it fully with a cloth, then apply a thin coat of oil across the cooking surface. The goal is a light film, not a pool of oil.
Why avoid the dishwasher?
Lodge says its standard cast iron cookware should be washed by hand. A dishwasher can remove seasoning and leave the iron exposed to moisture, which can lead to rust. If rust appears, the pan may often be restored, but the process depends on how much rust and damage there is.
Check the type of pan
These directions are for standard seasoned cast iron. Enameled cast iron has a different surface and may have different dishwasher guidance. Some specialty or heat-treated products also have their own instructions. Check the maker and product line before using an abrasive scrubber, dishwasher, or restoration method.
