Do not try to strip a monitor's matte coating. Solvents and abrasives can permanently damage display surfaces.

Detailed guide

Can you remove a monitor's matte coating?

There is no universal safe method for removing a monitor's matte coating. Manufacturers warn that solvents, alcohol, detergents, and abrasive cleaning can peel or permanently damage some display surfaces. Check the exact monitor manual before touching the coating.

A coating is not automatically a peel-off film

A matte appearance may come from the display surface itself or a coating applied as part of the panel. It should not be treated like a shipping film or removable screen protector unless the manufacturer identifies it as one. Dell's monitor guidance warns that unsuitable chemicals can cause peeling, discoloration, or a milky film. ASUS also cautions that alcohol and ammonia-based cleaners can damage screen coatings.

If you want less glare

Do not test solvents, blades, abrasives, or polishing compounds on the panel. They can permanently change the surface and may void warranty coverage. Try adjusting the monitor angle, moving nearby light sources, or changing the room lighting instead.

If the coating is already scratched or peeling, stop cleaning that area and check the warranty and support page for the exact model. Ask the manufacturer whether the panel or surface layer is replaceable. Do not assume a cleaning product that works on one display is safe for another.

What we do not know

Manufacturers do not publish one shared construction or repair procedure for every monitor. Without an exact model and its service documentation, a yes-or-no answer about physical removal would overstate what the available evidence supports.
